Inpatient – Clarity Child Guidance Center


The inpatient rotation at Clarity Child Guidance Center provides CAP fellows the opportunity to learn and work with an interdisciplinary team in the treatment of children, adolescents and families.
Fellows work with patients and families in all steps of the process from admission to discharge. In the process, they gain experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of disorders, exposure to complexities of family dynamics, and knowledge of access to care issues and community resources. Psychiatric emergencies are also evaluated.

Consults – University Health System - Dr. Roybal, MD The pediatric consultation-liaison (CL) service is a full-time 3-month rotation. We provide inpatient and hospital-based outpatient psychiatric consultation to the pediatric, surgical, and subspecialty services at University Hospital. Fellows gain experience in learning how to evaluate, diagnose, and treat psychiatric disorders in the context of complex medical problems; assisting hospital providers to communicate more effectively with their patients, understanding systems of care, and establishing and maintaining a consultative relationship. The population seen is broad, ranging from infants to transitional age youth and their parents, legal guardians, and siblings. Fellows work with physicians, nurses, and social workers from trauma surgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, plastics, ICU, cardiology, hematology-oncology, nephrology, hepatology, transplant, neurology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and pulmonology.

The child psychiatry residents are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of acutely and severely disturbed adolescents in an acute incarcerated setting. These adolescents face charges ranging from misdemeanor to felonies. In addition to Conduct Disorder (CD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), they have a broad spectrum of psychiatric illness including depression bipolar disorder, substance abuse, anxiety, trauma, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and combinations of these.

The child psychiatry residents are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of acutely and severely disturbed adolescents in a 96 bed residential treatment setting for repeat offenders. These adolescents face charges ranging from misdemeanor to felonies. In addition to CD and ODD they have broad spectrum of psychiatric illness including depression Bipolar disorder, substance abuse, anxiety, trauma, ADHD and combinations of these.

The child psychiatry residents are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of disturbed children and adolescents as part of an outpatient treatment setting. These children have typical issues seen in an outpatient setting with ADHD, ODD, depression, and anxiety as the most common. Many patients are treatment naïve.



Meadowlands

Residents are provided a private psychiatric practice experience with the Chair of Psychiatry. They will see culturally diverse children with mental health issues, ranging in age from 3 – 17 years of age. Diagnoses encountered include major child and adolescent psychiatric illnesses. The faculty consists of one full-time Board Certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, with site support from the clinical manager, schedulers, EMR, and billing. Residents are exposed to new assessments, pharmacological management, and coordination of care with referring physicians. Residents see an average of one new evaluation and 4-5 follow ups per half day.
