University Health System Psychiatric Services (UHS)

The University Health System (UHS) psychiatric services program focuses on providing the highest quality mental health care possible. We believe that the best care can be accomplished only through an interdisciplinary team approach. UHS and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) collaborate in providing such care.  Our patient population includes persons with Bipolar spectrum disorder, Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, substance abuse behavior, anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD), childhood and adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), personality disorders and suicidal and/or violent behaviors. Often our patients have very complicated social and financial situations, which only make more difficult the task of intervening in their emotional problems.  Our mission, however, as the primary Health Care facility for Bexar County, is to provide the best possible patient care, regardless of the patients’ financial status.

An important component of UHS psychiatric facilities is a dedicated Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) facility that provides 24 hour/7 days a week emergency psychiatric services. This facility is the only dedicate psychiatric emergency room in all of South Texas. The PES is staffed, around the clock, with experienced UTHSCSA faculty as well as psychiatry resident physicians. With approximately 400 visits monthly, PES is considered by many as the “safety net” for psychiatric services in the San Antonio area.

Complementing the PES is the 20 bed Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. This facility is staffed by 2 faculty psychiatrists and an advanced practice nurse providing the highest and most involved psychiatric care available in our area. They are assisted by a dedicated and experienced team of 2 social workers, one case manager and a group of experienced psychiatric nurses. The unit is in the process of expanding to add 6 new beds for involuntary patients  in order to help fulfill a critical need of treating this group of patients with the most difficult and dangerous psychiatric conditions.

On the medical and surgical floors, our Psychiatric Consultation team provides the care for patients with medical/surgical conditions co-existing with psychiatric conditions. The Psychiatry consultation team has worked collaboratively with medical and psychiatric services to improve both the efficiency patient care and a more clearly defined referral process.

Working with the 3 services mentioned above is the chemical dependency team providing evaluations and consultations for all substance abuse patients through out the hospital.

UHS outpatient psychiatric services are provided through an extensive collaboration with UTHSCSA Department of Psychiatry provide a full spectrum of psychiatric care including child and adolescents, adult, geriatric and substance abuse outpatient care.

All UHS psychiatric services are provided by UTHSCSA Department of Psychiatry faculty physicians. They are board certified psychiatrist many of whom are actively involved in teaching and/or research activities.
