Department of Psychiatry

Residency Research Track

Welcome to the Psychiatry Department's
New Resident Research Training Track

Given the dearth of postgraduate research fellowship applicants, the highly competitive grant funding environment, and exciting advances in both basic and clinical neurosciences, the UTHSCSA Department of Psychiatry Resident Research Committee has developed a Psychiatry Resident Research Training Track. This training program will allow selected residency applicants to explore and develop their research interests under the mentorship of established departmental investigators during the PGY-2 through PGY-4 years. Residents will have up to 40% protected research time during these three years to conduct their investigations and receive formal didactic training in research methodology. The remaining time will be spent in clinical settings to ensure board eligibility.

By the end of residency training, residents will have presented posters at scientific meetings, submitted manuscripts to peer reviewed journals, and formally presented their findings to the Department of Psychiatry. This combination of research activity, training and presentation will make the trainee highly competitive for research fellowship and faculty positions.
