RESEARCH PROJECT PROFILE Name of Project: Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness-CATIE II Investigators: Alexander Miller, Joseph McEvoy, Lon Schneider, Schott Stroup, Pierre Tariot, J. Lieberman Funding Source: NIMH Project Time Period: 01/01/05 - 09/30/09 Summary or Description of Project: The CATIE Schizophrenia Trial is a randomized controlled trial that will evaluate the effectiveness of atypical and conventional antipsychotic medications in patients with schizophrenia over an 18 month period. The study will compare the newer atypical antipsychotics with each other in patients with schizophrenia who are broadly representative of those with chronic and recurrent forms of the disorder. Patients who fail treatment with one newer atypical antipsychotic will go to the second phase of the study where the other newer atypical antipsychotics will be compared to either clozapine or ziprasidone. Outcome measures will extend beyond drug efficacy and safety to details about the lives of the participants, their quality of life, their cognition and their use of mental health and other services. Research Subjects Needed:Must be between ages 18 & 65 with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia & be appropriate for treatment with oral medications. Individuals are excluded from participating if they have pervasive developmental disorders, mental retardation, delirium, dementia.
