Brain donation must take place within 48 hours after death in order for the tissue to be suitable for most research protocols. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept donations from individuals who were on a ventilator or have certain infectious illnesses.

The brain is removed during autopsy at the morgue, or from the hospital or funeral home, and is transferred to the Southwest Brain Bank.

The procedure for brain removal does not cause disfigurement and allows for an open casket or other traditional funeral arrangements. Most religions support brain donation.

There is no cost for brain donation, however funeral arrangements remain the responsibility of the family.
