Excellence in psychiatry requires intensive training and experience in several distinct but related areas. We select outstanding physicians and provide them with a thoughtfully developed curriculum with a fundamental emphasis on assessment and treatment planning.

 

Trainees are also offered numerous opportunities to develop skill in modern therapeutic technology and an awareness of the legal and ethical implications of our work.

 

Supervision by outstanding faculty, many of whom are nationally recognized in their areas of expertise, is always close at hand, but coupled with the responsibility and independence needed to develop leadership skills in psychiatry.

 

Building around core clinical experiences with the full range of psychiatric disorders, residents have in-depth exposure to the ethical, psychotherapeutic, sociocultural, pharmacological and forensic dimensions of psychiatry.

 

We strive to maintain the humanistic and scientific balance that makes psychiatry a unique specialty in medicine.

Introduction

The Department of Psychiatry of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and its affiliated institutions offer fully accredited residency programs in general psychiatry and fellowships in:

  • Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Geriatric Psychiatry

As a major department in one of the vibrant medical centers in the country, the Psychiatry Department values highly its flexibility. Opportunities abound to study cross-cultural psychiatry and adaptation in the Hispanic population of South Texas. Research opportunities are individually designed for residents. Additionally, numerous experiences are available in community psychiatry as well as public and private sector psychiatry. Faculty members, representing the gamut of psychiatric specialties, offer the housestaff unusually well-balanced training opportunities. In the course of the four-year program, residents gain exposure to all contemporary theories of mental illness and practice in all current treatment methods. Clinical work is varied and closely supervised. Among the approximately 90 faculty members are individuals with expertise in a variety of areas, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Neurochemical correlates of mental illness
  • Psychopharmacology and Psychophysiology
  • Psychoanalysis
  • Consultation-liaison psychiatry (psychosomatic medicine)
  • Administrative and community psychiatry
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Substance abuse
  • Forensic psychiatry
  • Child and adolescent psychiatry
  • Geriatric psychiatry
  • Cultural psychiatry
  • Psychotherapy
  • Family therapy
  • Group psychotherapy

A number of faculty members are involved in major research efforts, notably basic and clinical research in the areas of genetics, neurochemistry, psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, substance abuse, child and adolescent psychiatry, and the epidemiology of all mental disorders. The faculty's overriding commitment is to teaching. Faculty research projects are considered resources to students, who have the option of participating in a number of ongoing laboratory and clinical investigations. The Department's academic commitment is evidenced by the ready participation of faculty in seminars, supervision, and on-site teaching. A further indication of the commitment to teaching is that, over the past twelve years, a consistently high percentage of UTHSCSA's Medical School graduates choose postgraduate psychiatry training.
