Dr. Escamilla is a psychiatrist and scientist with more than 20 years of experience in genetic research and research training. Escamilla grew up in San Antonio, graduating from Central Catholic High School. He completed his B.A. at Harvard University, his M.D. at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and his post-doctorate work (in psychiatry and psychiatric genetics) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is currently a Professor with a joint appointment at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) in the Departments of Psychiatry and Cellular and Structural Biology. At UTHSCSA, he currently directs the South Texas Psychiatric Genetics Research Center (based in San Antonio, Texas) and the South Texas Medical Genetics Research Group (based in Edinburg, Texas).

Dr. Escamilla has been the principal investigator of several studies focusing on the genetics of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and has led multi-site collaborations of researchers from the United States, Mexico, Central and South America. He has also developed two training grants for young researchers who are interested in the areas of genetics of psychiatric illnesses and been a primary mentor for over 30 students at all levels (high school, undergraduate, medical school, pharmacology graduate programs, public health graduate programs, post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty) in South Texas, Mexico and Costa Rica. He is especially committed to improving our understanding of the biological and environmental causes of severely disabling illnesses, and to encouraging and developing the potential of minorities interested in becoming researchers.

His research findings have been published in Nature Genetics, the American Journal of Human Genetics, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science and other journals.

Escamilla is a consultant to the NIMH Systematic Treatment and Enhancement Program for the Bipolar Disorder Genetics Group (Harvard University and the University of Pittsburgh) and serves on the Bio-behavioral and Behavioral Processes Study Section of the Center for Scientific Review Board for the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He has adjunct faculty appointments at the Universidad Autonoma de la Ciudad de Mexico (Mexico City, Mexico) and the University of Texas Pan American (Edinburg, Texas) and is also a diploma candidate at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland.
