Dr. Cervando Martinez is Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. A native of Texas, he is bilingual, trained at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and received psychiatric training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He also served in the US Navy for 2 years prior to joining the faculty. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and is Board Certified in Psychiatry since 1976.
He has an interest in the treatment of chronic and severe mental disorders in the community. He also has competence in geriatric psychiatry and psychotherapy. He is currently active in the Bipolar Illness Intervention Center in Hispanic Communities program. He is director of mental health services for the HIV/AIDS service of University Hospital System.
His teaching activities include teaching psychiatry to medical students, psychiatry residents, family medicine residents, and advanced nurse practitioner students. He has medical school/medical education administrative experience, having served for 10 years as Associate Dean for Affiliated Programs and CME. In this capacity he was part of the team that developed the Regional Academic Health Center of UTHSCSA. He has served on numerous community boards and committes.

This is a Phase 2a safety/tolerability and clinical pharmacology study to determine if there are adverse events associated with oral vigabatrin (gamma vinyl-gamma-amino butyric acid; VGB) concurrent with intravenous (IV) cocaine infusions. Secondary outcome measures include PK parameters, brain GABA levels, and psychological assessments as well as interactions of VGB administration on the PK of cocaine and of cocaine administration on the PK of VGB. |

Specific Aim 1: To compare the effects of risperidone and aripiprazole treatment on 3-month outcomes (positive symptoms, negative symptoms, cognition, quality of life). Specific Aim 2: To comprehensively assess and compare the side effects associated with risperidone and aripiprazole treatment. Secondary Aims: 1) To follow subjects for a total of 52 weeks to examine longer term outcomes of subjects in the 12 week trial. 2) To utilize genetic association strategies to identify the DNA sequences that significantly alter clinical phenotype and predict treatment response. |
