Dr. Velligan is a clinical psychologist who has dedicated her career to the study and treatment of serious mental illness (SMI). Dr. Velligans internationally recognized research program focuses on the cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia, the functional consequences of these deficits, and interventions to decrease cognitive impairment and improve community functioning in individuals with this illness. She has developed Cognitive Adaptation Training a home-based treatment using environmental supports such as signs, checklists, alarms and the organization of belongings to bypass deficits in cognitive functioning and improve adaptive behaviors. CAT has been disseminated to more than 6 countries. An additional research focus is on adherence to oral antipsychotic medications for individuals living in the community. Dr. Velligan recently published an expert consensus guideline on dealing with adherence to medication which has been widely disseminated.
