As noted earlier, intensive supervision is an important element of this program. In addition to being assigned supervisors for each clinical assignment, residents have a preceptor whose duty it is to help maintain the resident's orderly progression through the training year.

Each student is appointed as a Resident in Clinical Psychology by the Department of Psychiatry. The appointment is for the 12-month training period from July 1 to June 30.

Residents are also asked to evaluate the program and do so at the end of each rotation and at the year's end. Additionally, residents rotate to attend meetings of the Psychology Residency Training Committee, a body which meets monthly to review and discuss training issues. Hence, there is ample opportunity for resident input to the program throughout the training year.

At the beginning of each rotation, each resident and preceptor develop specific training goals for the first few months and for the year. Every six months, after input from the training faculty and their preceptees, preceptors develop a detailed evaluation of the resident, reviewing performance along a number of key dimensions (e.g., knowledge of personality theory and skill in interview techniques, sensitivity to clinical data) and make suggestions for pertinent learning experiences. The final evaluation is submitted to the trainee's graduate department.

Trainees experience their year here as very busy. Work activities typically extend beyond 40 hours, with a 45-55-hour week being the more common experience. The work consists of demanding clinical assignments which provide the residents with a genuinely gratifying opportunity for professional growth.

We arrange for ten (10) days of vacation during the year and expect that residents will split vacation days between rotations. In addition, we allow three (3) administrative days for conference attendance, etc.

Applicants for our residency &/or fellowship program must clear a screening process to ensure that they are not listed by a federal agency as excluded, suspended, or otherwise ineligible for participation in federal programs. The UTHSC will perform the screening for you at no cost. A drug screen may be required by training site. Immunizations may be required by training site.
