Rotation Description

Level PGY-1 Rotations
Primary Care (4 months)

  • Inpatient Internal Medicine (2 months)
  • Pediatrics or Internal Medicine Specialty Service (2 months)

    Neurology Wards (1 month)
    Psychiatric Inpatient Units (7 months)

  • University Hospital Psychiatry Unit
  • VA Adult Admitting Units
  • VA Admitting Unit (neuropsychiatry beds)
  • Wilford Hall Medical Center Psychiatry Unit

    Disorders on these units include

  • Major affective disorders
  • Schizophrenia and related disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Organic mental disorders
  • Substance abuse disorders

    Level PGY-2 Rotations
    Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry (4 months)

  • University Hospital and VA Hospital (2 months)
  • Wilford Hall Medical Center (2 months)
  • Collaboration with physicians on medical, surgical and ob/gyn services
  • Topic-centered case conferences
  • Reading seminars

    Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (1 months)
    Outpatient Care

  • Behavior disorders
  • Learning disabilities
  • Neuroses
  • Psychoses
  • Abuse/Neglect
  • Family therapy
    Geriatric (1 month)

    Substance Abuse (1 month)

    University Hospital Psychiatric Emergency Services (2 months)

  • Emergency room/triage (2 months), including Night Float. The "night float" system eliminates residents having to work all day after being up in the ER/triage all night. It was developed by the residents and remains a popular mechanism for covering on-call responsibilities.
  • Seminars
  • Clinical teaching by faculty
  • Close supervision

    Neuropsychiatry (1 month)

    Psychotherapy (3 long-term patients)

    Level PGY-3 Rotations
    This all-outpatient year emphasizes continuity of care, allowing long-term psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments. Three days a week are spent at one or more of the 3 following sites:

  • Center for Health Care Services Mental Health Clinic
  • VA Hospital outpatient psychiatry clinic
  • VA Psychiatric/Primary Care Clinic (PRIME)

    Psychotherapy (long-term patients)

  • Five patients per week, or
  • Lead an insight-oriented psychotherapy group in lieu of two patients

    Teaching/Administrative Psychiatry “Junior Faculty” (4 months)
    Forensics (2 months)
    Research (2 months)

  • Patient care
  • Resident, medical student, & nurse education
  • Ward management

    Managed Care (1 months)

    Elective time (5 months)

  • Freedom to pursue areas of interest and explore career choices
    Teaching responsibilities
  • Medical students in psychiatry courses and clerkships
  • Interns on inpatient units
    Supervised treatment
  • Long- and short-term psychotherapy patients throughout the year
  • Psychotherapy (7 long-term patients)

    Neurology (1month, if needed)
