
Although
it is the eighth largest city in the United States, San Antonio has
retained the charm of a small town while it has grown into a
metropolitan community of more than one million residents.
San Antonio is a truly multicultural city, with approximately
half of the
population of Hispanic descent. This twin heritage permeates the city
and
is reflected in its architecture, its restaurants, and its politics.
Nine universities and colleges are located throughout the city.
Graduate degrees in law, engineering, biology, social work, nursing
education and administration are available from universities outside the
Health Science Center.
San
Antonio's cultural resources are rich and growing. Among them are the
San Antonio Symphony, offering a full concert season and the annual
Grand Opera Festival; chamber music societies; theater groups; ballet
and modern dance companies; and three major fine art museums: the Marion
Koogler McNay Art Institute; the San Antonio Museum of Art; and the
Witte Museum.
Over
5,500 acres of park land have been reserved within San Antonio,
including some of the finest botanical gardens in the country. The San
Antonio Zoo is also renowned nationwide. Sports facilities are
ubiquitous, with football, soccer, and softball fields, swimming pools,
tennis courts, golf courses, and nature and bridle paths located in
virtually every corner of the city. Cycling is very popular, including
off-road and street races.
San
Antonio is the home of the San Antonio Spurs, NBA professional
basketball team, and the San Antonio Missions professional baseball
team.
A domed stadium has recently been built which will continue to attract
many musical and sporting events.
Sea World® of Texas marine life park is a major tourist attraction. Six Flags® Fiesta
Texas®, a music theme and amusement part, opened in 1992. The San
Antonio Livestock Exposition and Rodeo and the Charity Horse Show are
among the best of their kind. The city is naturally Texan.
San Antonio, located in south central Texas, enjoys a subtropical
climate with normal mean temperatures ranging from 52 degrees in January
to 90 degrees in July.
The Texas Hill Country, a region of rivers, lakes, and hiking trails, is
just a forty-minute drive away. Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico are both
within a three-hour drive of San Antonio.
